I like the concept of this mod...but...If the aliens get stronger at the same rate as the weapons get more powerful, are you really changing anything?

Every game that involves the player leveling up in some way has a version of that problem.  It's a game design challenge.  Psychologically, the player feels like he's progressing and getting more powerful.  This is reinforced by the fact that even late in the game you will still encounter many "vanilla" monsters who have not changed at all, and when you blow them away with ease it indicates how far you have come.  But there will also be an increasing number of elite monsters.  These aren't simply stronger than regular ones, they have new abilities that force you to try different tactics.  For example, some of the monsters will have energy shields in front of them that they lower only when firing on you.

Sounds like you've put some thought into it. You're approach should work very well.

I'm not sure about the Red series: they're storydriven maps, and every map continues where the previous one left off. Of course, I wouldn't mind them being used at all. The mod sounds like a very cool idea.
But I think maps like Clear the coast or OGBB would be more suitable then the red-series, they're more 'neutral'. It's up to DT which maps he wants to use though.  Thumbs up

I don't know about Red 1 (never played it  Embarrassed), but I think Red 2 works fine by itself.  It is action driven, not story or puzzle driven (though it does have a story, which is fine -- each level is a mission and is allowed to have a story).  The later Red maps are more atmospheric and puzzle driven so they don't fit the mod as well.

OGBB is in already, and thanks for reminding me about Clear the Coast, which will fit perfectly.  I've also been scouting through the DNR archives and I have found a few other gems that I had never played before.

By the way, OGBB is actually an agonizing example for me.  On the one hand, it's a great map and fits the mod well.  On the other hand, it's one of those maps were you can waste a lot of time running around looking for the button you missed or trying to figure out where to go next, which is definitely not the experience I want players to have with my mod.

Don't worry, you're not missing out much.  Red1 is very weak compared to its sequels (and that's putting it mildly  Tongue).
But yeah, red2 would fit in, it's the most straight forward map of the series.

It's been a while since I've played OGBB, but I don't remember it having hard puzzles. The unlinear beginning can be confusing I suppose.

You could also use both Legends maps and Alan Page´s maps in your mod... truly ancient gems from the past, oh, and Hell Station by Pipeline - whatever the theme of your mod is. Hell Station is another great action-packed map.

And Merljin, where to get your first Red map? I would like to play, no matter how bad it actually is. You could upload it here, if it doesn´t matter DeeperThought.

My favorite Pipeline map is DOOM CITY, which is the last map he made.  It has too much ammo and health, but still a great map.  I don't think I played Hell Station all the way to the end, but from what I recall it is a good map.  I will include some space themed maps, although I'm not sure about that one.  DNR's Fernando has made some great space maps recently and I'm thinking of including some of those (they make an episode, but they also play well individually).

Here is the current map list.  The player has to get through 10 of these in random order.  This list is still changing, and there will be at least one other set of maps:

Some of these are questionable choices and may be replaced.  For example, Freedom is an awesome map but there's a part where the player has to go through a fireplace, and it's easy to get stuck in there and get burned badly...very annoying!

throw beta moonbase 2 in there too, that would be good its very free-roam and would encourage exploring to find things to kill and lvl up

Beta One or Two by Robert Travis could be used in your mod as level select map, because it is large-scaled and wide open map. Oh, and ABBA is also superb map.

Clear The Coast also has custom sounds, but then they take the normal Duke file name ones so it doesn't break the map etc.

But they might sound out of place, but it's still a great map.
