I haven't been following things too much lately, but from an external perspective it looks like the flow of releases is hitting a low point again. I don't know if there's already such a project going on or not, but I have some spare time these days (just a few hours here and there), and I'm in the mood for some mapping. The latest CBP held on DN-R, Suburban Hive, turned out to be a really good map (I don't remember how long the limit for each part was though). So maybe we could start a new one ?

I can get things started and do a first part tonight, or another night sometime this week. Suggestions for the theme are welcome, I think experimenting with something random / fresh could be interesting (ie. an alien world or something). I'm not thinking of implementing DukePlus effects in my section because I don't know how to implement them and can't be bothered learning atm, but it could be a good idea for the next sections here and there, let's try to have an open approach. Just wondering whether or not people would be interested, and who would be down.

Seeing as I don't have that much time either I don't think I will be able to manage the organisation throughout the project, let alone debug the map prior its release, like I did last time, but maybe we can count on everyone who joins, to be responsible as far as their work is concerned, and fix their parts / pass the map on accordingly.

Suburban Hive was a 2 hour CBP. I about lost my mind trying to do my part in 15 minute increments.

I have a little more time now then I did back then, but I don't think that I'd have adequate time to take on the project leader position. That, and my skills aren't strong enough that I "know every trick in the book" to be able to fix and fine tune the finished product. Beta-test is probably my strong point.

There's another CBP (NB?CBP) going on right now. The thread used to be here, but when the site went down, they moved it over to Duke4. I don't blame them for not bringing it back.

Not too many DN-R denizen are lurking here anymore after this last episode of site failure. If you want to start a CBP, you might have better luck at Duke4 or maybe even AMC.

I could throw my hat in at some point for this, but I'd probably have to do my part on a Saturday or a Sunday.  Hopefully doing it two hours straight will let me get more done and make a cleaner portion than the last one.

X hours CB projects are cool when you do them once, twice or three times. But always thinking of projects with such a limited time to work on sounds boring, at least for me. I´m a visual player and therefore i like polished projects, from my experience i can say that limiting the mapster time to just two hours doesn´t accelerate the procces but limites the quality. It would be better if, for example each mapper has one week to work on the map. Thus you ensure a quick advance and maybe a more decent quality.

Not that my opinion should considered, i probably won´t take part of this. because i don´t want to work with some people and because i don´t have too much time anyway. But, whatever you do is great, it´s a shame that Duke Community is taking its last breaths, and this can extend its life at least a few more months...

That´s stupid. Moving the thread to another forum would rely in even more members leaving this site. It also would carry other unsatisfactory consequences like having a bunch of n00bs trying to join the project. This is the perfect site for community build projects.

Hah, hah, haa. That's the best way to ensure the project will take at least six months to finish whileas the 2-hour cbp concept is doable in a week or two at the most (like last time).

Yeah, I don't really want to ask people from duke4 to take part in this, and I can't really be bothered starting a thread on AMC either knowing that it will barely get any attention and people no longer care much about Duke there. As I've said before the only Duke forum I still actually like is this one, for it gathers a community I can relate to, whereas the other sites... not so much.

I agree with Mikko's point as well. Hell even the idea of releasing an episode made of maps built in one day that MetHy and I came up with a few months back eventually fell on hold, because passing on the maps to everyone and organizing everything became too much of a hassle, with people changing their mind and dropping in and out of the roster etc. The truth is that as soon as something has to be slightly elaborated, or starts to demand some kind of central organization, you can no longer trust anyone. Which is understandable, gaming / building shouldn't be a priority for anyone, there's so many things that are more important in life - it's still just a bit stupid to see the community start collapsing just because the few of us that are left can't really be fucked anymore, while we all still love the game.

If anything we could always randomly start a map and keep sending it to each other back and forth for everyone to random stuff with no time restriction, it could be fun but it's pretty much guaranteed that the file will quickly get lost on someone's hard drive and not be heard of again

A little off-topic but, talking of the community´s collapse. Yesterday i signed the deed of my new house, and from now on i have two months left to live where i currently live and therefore, two last months of internet connection. I´m trying to finish my IT LIVES map before that deadline. Let´s hope i can!

I reckon, as sad as it is, that this project probably won't get past us just talking about it.

AMC loyalists for the most part don't care about mapping anymore (except maybe the Oostrum bros if they still frequent there).

Duke4 has way more activity in than this place, but like it was mentioned, the people that would want to join are the ones who'd probably hold the map project hostage for an extended amount of time. Then when they get around to passing it on, their work would probably bring the overall quality down. You'd probably have to private message the people you think might have the desired potential and convince them to come over here.

Here at DN-R, the way things are now, you'd be lucky to get more than three or four people in on it.

I also agree with MRCK about here being the community I can relate to. I don't fit in over at AMC. Duke4 is okay, but I just get this feeling that I'm more of a lurker than a participater. Like I'm welcome there, but just barely.

Gambini: there's no network service where you're moving to? I hope you can finish your map soon. Seems we've wandered into a map drought at the moment with no projects that have clear release dates anytime soon. I doubt if my map will be finished for another three or four months.

Its been a long time since I have built anything, I would like to be in on this cause I can at least commit 2 hours and it may re inspire me to build again, whatever.

I can be the second mapper.

Speaking as a player who is a big fan of both MRCK and WG's maps, I would love to see this happen.  It's like hearing a collaboration of two of your favorite bands.  And I would not underestimate Forge, if he's willing to take part.  His maps are right up there and keep getting better.

Some of the best maps ever released (for example:  Discarded Stronghold and OGGB) were made by multiple mappers but were not CBPs.  I wonder if you guys could get the best results by doing a real collaboration with no rules instead of having a time limit.  It seems to me that experienced mappers who have managed to release a lot of maps already have the discipline necessary to pull it off without arbitrary time limits.  Just my two cents.

OGBB was made by friendly converse with 2 mappers I knew well, and knew I liked the way they mapped, Discarded stronghold was a effort on my part to put all of Quakis abandoned maps all into 1 playable level, all of the inside areas were his abandoned levels, outside areas were made by me and was how I connected them all into a level, I had full reign over the level at this point, then Mikko picked it up at 95% to complete it. Both maps took quite some time, though OGBB was rather fast compared to normal cause all of us really enjoyed working on the map and working together, and I have got to admit, that is a hard combination to come by.

I do like MRCKS style and would be cool to map with him, though I am not mapping atm, 2 hours is all I have to give and was the only reason I asked to join. I would only join a major mapping project if I knew I had the time.

Two hours a day is a lot though, for a hobby.  I "only" manage about 2 hours a day of Duke modding now (some days more, some less) and I don't even have a full time job atm.

Anyways, I'm on a laptop until next week (then I'm going to head for that big LAN party again) but if you get this thing started today with MRCK & WG building the first two parts then I just might be willing to be the third.

I like the "alien world" idea.

Sign me up as well, I have no problem spending 2 hours of my time on a level, on sundays I'm usually not doing anything particulary usefull anyway.  Tongue

I haven't built anything for quite a while though, me and my brother are trying to get back to working on Imperium after months of inactivity. So hopefully we can finally finish the maps this summer or something (on a related note: William, could you finish the art files sometimes soon? It shouldn't be that time consuming, after all, we only need some viewscreen messages).

Anyway, I would love to participate, the previous 2-hour project was a lot of fun. Alienworld sounds like a cool idea. Another cool theme would be a post-apocalyptic world, I've never built anything like that.

I also hope the one-day episode gets released sometimes soon, I quite like the level I made for that one (and the other levels as well).  Wink
